The question is: Can wrapping exotics be a great way to make money? Wrapping exotic cars is both a challenge and an opportunity. While these high-end vehicles can be great for showcasing your skills and promoting your business, they also come with unique difficulties. Like with anything, it’s all about finding the right balance so, for The Wrap Institute, the answer is: Absolutely—if you dial them in correctly. This week, we’ll show you the essentials for successfully wrapping exotic cars, ensuring you maximize both your reputation and your profits.
When wrapping exotic cars, it’s usually recommended to remove hardware due to their complex shapes, especially on the bumpers and back end with spoilers and vents.. However, with exotics, a different protocol is required to avoid warranty issues. The reason is in most cases, removing the hardware yourself could void the owner’s warranty. So, it’s best to work with a certified mechanic, often through the dealership, to ensure everything stays intact. This can get quite expensive so if the owner balks at this additional cost, no problem. Alternatively, you can wrap with the hardware left on, as we did with the F8 series. Not a single piece of hardware was taken off yet achieved full coverage.. We did this with a smart combination of techniques like inlays, 3M Knifeless Tape and pinstripes that matched the paint of the vehicle. With both of these options, your process aligns with warranty protection, shows expertise and builds trust with your clients
Exotics are known for their complex curves, particularly on bumpers. This means that inlays and overlays are essential for achieving a flawless finish and ensuring long term hold. Executing high-quality inlays that blend seamlessly and look like one piece is a sign of true mastery. For inlays we recommend a combination of precut pieces as well as using 3M Knifeless Tape. The key is to have perfect uniformity on the body lines and, when possible, make sure the overlap faces away from visual. Note, if the film has a matte or satin finish, be sure to wipe the bottom layer edge with 70% IPA and dry it before applying the top layer. This raises the surface energy and ensures a long term seal on the overlap.
Exotic cars are far from average in both their price and looks, which means they require extra precautions. Before you begin wrapping an exotic, make sure you’ve increased your Garage Keepers Insurance limit to be fully covered in case of any mishaps. It only takes a few minutes to do and it can save you a great deal of trouble. An additional tip is to install security cameras in the workspace. This can help lower insurance fees as well as give the client confidence that their vehicle is well taken care of at all times.
