Mastering corners is the hallmark of a professional wrapper. Whether it’s for commercial wraps, interior films, PPF, or color changes, wrapping corners requires precision and technique. For this week’s topic, we dive into the fundamentals of wrapping corners, revealing how to achieve perfection in any medium. To help our members scale quickly on these tricky sections, The Wrap Institute, we’ve created systems and given these techniques a name to help them easily become a part of your skill set.
Color Change Wrap Corners
When it comes to color changes, one of the first places a client (or fellow installer looks) are the corners. All too often, there are tiny wrinkles on the corners which is an indication of tension, low quality and, quite simply, the wrong technique for that material was used. With color change films there are a variety of materials used —whether it’s calendar, cast, or the increasingly popular dry apply PPF. This means you need a broad set of techniques to ensure full coverage and long term hold. At TWI, we’ve developed four specific corner techniques that you can dial in to the specific characteristics of the material being used to ensure flawless results every time:
Cold Pre-Stretch
3D
Massage
Zero Stretch
TWI Tip: Using the TWI Lacy Tip is now Justin’s #1 recommendation for corners as it helps form and seal the film perfectly.
Interior Wrapping Film Corners
Interior wraps present a unique challenge due to the thickness of the material and sharp 90-degree angles commonly found on tables, doors and cabinets. For these wraps, having a variety of corner techniques is critical for both success and profitability. The following methods ensure smooth and durable finishes:
Quick and Dirty
Overlap Cut Back
Buttjoint
One Piece
These corner strategies give professional installers a variety of options that can help tremendously with workflow, confidence and profits.
PPF Wrap Corners
With PPF, full corner coverage is now the standard. However, the thickness and elasticity of PPF can make it tricky to wrap corners without wrinkles or long-term failures. To ensure a perfect finish:
Prep the corner with a kiss of adhesive promoter along the edges to ensure strong adhesion.
For finishing, TWI recommends using TWI tweezers, a tool designed to make those tight corner wraps flawless and wrinkle-free when cutting away the excess film. The pincers at the tip hold the film strongly with minimal effort so the full focus can be on the cut, not the hold.
