Choosing the right solution for wet installs can be tricky, especially when dealing with paint protection film (PPF), tint, or frosted films. There are a variety of solutions out there, like gels, distilled water, and our favorite slip solution soap. Each has its pros and cons, and it’s crucial to understand when and how to use them effectively for a seamless install.
Gel or Slip: Which is Best?
There’s an ongoing debate about whether gel or slip solutions are better for wet installs, but at TWI, we believe both have their place. Gel, which includes alcohol, is great for tackling curvy areas like mirrors, handles, and bumpers because it bites faster onto the surface. For larger, flat sections, slip solution provides smoother workflow and more precise adjustments. Use both strategically for the best results on different areas of the vehicle.
Getting the Right Mix with Slip Solutions
While gel solutions come conveniently pre-mixed, slip solutions need to be made manually, which can be tricky. The wrong ratio of soap or water can ruin an install, either by being too slippery or too tacky. To avoid this, TWI recommends using a syringe to measure the soap accurately and experimenting with different mixes, depending on the PPF or film you’re using. It’s also essential to use distilled or osmosis-filtered water to ensure a consistent, high-quality slip solution every time.
The Best Soap for Wet Installs
Choosing the right soap is critical to a successful wet install. Many installers rely on Dawn, baby shampoo, or specific slip products, but TWI has a favorite: Rainer’s Ape Apple Potion, developed with Yellotools. Made in Germany, it’s not only skin-safe but also delivers the perfect balance of slip and tack. This special soap is designed to help you achieve smoother installs with fewer issues, making it a top choice for professional wrappers.
